National GEN Student and Alumni Conference to be held on the 12th May 2017 at the University of Nottingham, Royal Derby Hospital

The GEN Student and Alumni National Conference will offer delegates the opportunity to:

  • Hear from National Health Care leaders about their views on the impact and challenges GEN presents to the nursing profession.
  • Attend workshops focused on clinical academic careers, advanced nursing practice, writing for publication and writing at masters level.
  • Present and view posters on dissertation projects, influence you have had on nursing practice and places the GEN qualification has taken you near and far.
  • Network with GEN students and Alumni and share experiences on what works and what doesn’t work to inform GEN curriculum design and career pathways.

2nd meeting of the GEN-Int Network to be Held on the 14th October at Oxford Brooks University

The focus will be on future proofing Graduate Entry Nursing and will have a key note speech followed by facilitated workshop from Professor Dame Jill McCleod-Clark on how we can influence the development of the new NMC standards.

Update re Government Response to funding of Graduate Entry Nursing Education (GEN) – England

Due to considerable feedback the government in England has paused its initial proposals regarding changes to the funding of pre-registration, postgraduate education. It is now ready to consider placing GEN students on the same footing as undergraduate pre- registration students by allowing them to be eligible for student loans. The final decision regarding this has not been reached, (there is a further bulletin due out in the Autumn 2016), however for the academic year 2017/8 funding and commissioned numbers will remain the same across England.

The government has agreed to cover expenses students incur regarding travel and accommodation and child care costs. However it had decided not to continue the 12 month bursary payment currently payable to students who suspend their study for a period of maternity leave. HEIs are requested to discuss any maternity leave funding with Student Finance England, which suggests a possible extension of the student loan to cover this period.

Despite full details and the final decision being still pending, the GEN Network feel that this is a positive step and recognises the significant affect withdrawal of funding to GEN students would have on nurse education providers and the workforce at large.

The GEN-Int Network will be officially launched to an international audience at the NET NEP 2016 conference in Brisbane. Members of the network will be facilitating a Masterclass exploring international perspectives on maximising graduateness through curriculum design. For more information see the conference website.
